The family Busietta is deriving from the place where the original bearer held land. The name of the location is known as Allier, in France. References to this name include a record of Arnaudet de Busietta D'Araujuaon who obtained his release from Captivity on December 23rd 1526, in the plains of Navarrenx, a ransom having been paid to obtain his freedom. The Busietta family were awarded coats of arms: known as Bourbon Comte De Busietta or Busset who participated in the crusade to the Holy Land. There are also records pertaining to the christening of Francois Busietta, son of Isaacq Busietta and Catherine Pour Chet, which took place in Saint Germain en Laye on the 7th April 1668.
The Busiettas came to Malta circa 1730 during the reign of Grand Master Antonio Manoel De Vilhena. The family prospered in the 1800 and throughout the nineteenth century they were leading merchants in Malta, being part of the British Empire since 1802. Francesco Busietta, the great great grandfather of William Busietta, was a founder-member of the present Malta Chamber of Commerce in 1848 (which was initially known as the English Reading Room), as well as founder-member of the elite Gentlemen's Club in Valletta in 1850, known as the Casino Maltese.
Adrian Busietta, William Busietta's son, is the present Grand Master Emeritus of Malta who was invited to join the Knights Hospitallers of the Sovereign Order of St John of Jerusalem Knights of Malta in 1980, and at the time was created Knight of Justice. The Sovereign Order is under the patronage of His Majesty King Michael of Romania. He is a senior officer of this world body which brings together Knights from all over the world. Chevalier Adrian Busietta was created Grand Prior of Malta and Member of the Supreme Council representing Europe in 1994. In 1995 he was appointed Deputy Grand Chancellor International and Roving Ambassador of the Order. In 1997 he was appointed Deputy Grand Master and was created a Baron of the Holy Roman Empire on the 20th September 1993 - Baron 'Gladi Et Aquila' and on the 5th April 1999 was elevated to Duke of Mount Touside and Saint John.
