Adrian Busietta History

 

Adrian Busietta was Chairman of the Busietta Group of Companies, which has been active in business over the last 200 years since 1802. His great grand father Francesco Busietta was a leading merchant of the 19th Century and a Founder Member of the Malta Chamber of Commerce in 1848 and of the Casino Maltese in 1852. In 1999 The Muscats General Stores Limited group and RHF Industries Limited were sold out at 100%, which used to be be part of Busietta Group of Companies.

The Busietta Group of Companies comprises a conglomerate of over fifteen companies covering land and property development buying and selling Hotels and has shareholdings in various subsidiary and periphery companies.

Malta Chamber of Commerce:

Mr Busietta has also been very active in the Malta Chamber of Commerce since 1963 and was elected its 39th and the youngest President in 1975 and again in 1976 and is honorary council member for Life. He was Chairman and Founder member of the Maltese Arab Chamber of Commerce, then he became President in 1976 to 1984, and again from 1991 - 2001, covering the whole Arab World from Morocco to Saudi Arabia. Mr Busietta was a personal acquaintance of King Hassan, the late lamented father of the present King, and the Saudi Royal Family, apart of course of our Libyan brothers who were integral partners from 1970 to date.

Banking:

Adrian was also very active in Banking being a partner and substantial owner representative of a shareholding block of Tagliaferro Bank [50%] (Est. 1812), Malta's foremost Merchant Bank, from 1959 to 1973 and Scicluna's Bank (Est. 1873) and National Bank of Malta, [33%] (Est. 1848) from 1969 - 1973, which comprised 50% of all banking at the time. The National Bank of Malta, after nationalization, continued to date. as the Bank of Valletta Limited.

In 1972 there was a hostile run on the Bank by the government of the time; this forced a decision to be made on the Banks future. Rather than liquidate, which would have significantly benefited the shareholders, a decision was made to sell the shares at a very low price, a loss for the shareholders but saving over 500 Bank employees� jobs and customer�s investments.

Sovereign Hospitallers Order of St John of Jerusalem Knights of Malta:

In 1980 Mr Adrian Busietta was invited to join the Sovereign Hospitallers Order of St John of Jerusalem Knights of Malta, The Ecumenical Order of the Czar of Russia and created Knight of Justice. He is a senior officer of this world body which brings together Knights from all over the world. Chevalier Adrian Busietta was created Grand Prior of Malta and Member of the Supreme Council representing Europe in 1994. In 1997 was appointed Lieutenant Grand Master and was Created a Baron of the Holy Roman Empire on 20th September 1993 - Baron 'Gladi Et Aquila' and on the 5th April 1999 was elevated to Duke of Mount Touside and Saint John.

Hotel and Building Industry:

As an entrepreneur, the Hotel and Building Industry had involved Adrian Busietta for the last thirty years. During this period he has built and/or refurbished, in partnership with other partners, over ten Hotels, amongst them ownership of entire island of Comino consisting of 2.5 sq. km of land and buildings, together with the luxury Comino Hotel and Santa Maria Holiday Complex on the same Island, Ulysses Village in Xlendi, Gozo, and in Malta the Hotel Sliema, the Xemxija Bay Hotel in Xemxija St Paul's Bay, Malta, and the Hotel St Julien in Paceville and the Delfina Hotel which was sold and is now the Vivaldi Golden Tulip Hotel also in Dragonara Road, Paceville, next to the main entrance of the Malta Casino. He was also responsible with others for building three office blocks - Tagliaferro Centre in High Street, Sliema (Now Bank of Valletta Centre), Europa Centre (previously NATO HEADQUARTERS) in Floriana and the Daikin Centre in Msida, as well as many other tourist and residential buildings.

Maltese heritage:

It is interesting to note that even Maltese heritage has attracted Adrian's attention. Various old castles and palaces such as Palazzo Busietta in Wardija, which have been expertly and lovingly restored and being currently used have served over the years as an official home. A second castle is Castello Dei Baroni also in Wardija which is currently being used for numerous functions, seminars and diplomatic receptions. Castello Dei Baroni is today established as the headquarters of the Sovereign Order of St John of Jerusalem Knights of Malta world wide.

Madliena Village:

Another ambitious and exciting project is undoubtedly the Luxury Residential Village Complex at Madliena, Malta.
